Aging hippies John Brader and his wife Joanie travel from New York to Oklahoma in search of John’s Native American roots and find a twisted family tale of cruelty, greed, hallucinogenic Indian medicines, and lost wealth. In Oklahoma, John discovers he is the sole heir of his grandfather’s oil lands, which sends him looking for his grandfather’s lost deeds. The family story begins in the early nineteenth century, when the tribe was forced-marched on the infamous Trail of Tears from its lands in Mississippi to Indian Territory, now Oklahoma, and ends sometime in the future. John Brader discovers his family was capable of great cruelty, such as burying alive an enslaved African woman and scalping of African-American Union troops during the Civil War. He also finds that his grandfather was gay and, in a secret ceremony, married to a famous tribal evangelist. Choctaw hallucinogenic medicines haunt the family causing murder, sexual perversions, and paranoiac fears of slave revolts. Weaving together satire, historical time and place, and family drama, the story opens up multiple and unique ways of seeing history, racism, religious zeal, and American culture.

Fact blends so well with the story in "An All American Family," that it is difficult at times to distinguish the fictional portions of this entertaining novel from the historical backdrop of events such as The Trail of Tears, The Battle of Poison Springs and the appropriation of Native American lands by the Dawes Commission. This double-layered novel alternates the narrative between the present-day John Brader, a part Choctaw aging hippie searching for his Native American roots, and the history of the Choctaws as seen through the ancestors John Brader attempts to trace. The cruelty of John's anti-bellum South Choctaw forefathers, who fought with the Confederacy, abuse slaves, a la "Django Unchained", and rob the full-blooded Choctaws, all the time rationalizing everything they do through their self-serving assumption of superiority as half-breeds, contrasts starkly with John and his crowd's present day view of always noble, green-earth oriented Native AmericansUltimately, the novel is about racism, stereotypes, and hidden realities--the dark secrets--obscured beneath the grainy black and white photographs of long dead ancestors. The novel swings between horrific violence, especially in the background historical sections, to laugh-out loud hilarious vignettes in the modern portions, such as John and wife June dancing as "Indians" at a Woodstock festival and handing out "authentic Indian recipes" downloaded from the internet, John's father protesting the image of the Cleveland Indian's Chief Wahoo in Metropolitan Stadium, and Wall Street Warlocks and Witches, with interestingly located pentagrams, appealing to long-dead Chief Gramatan of Bronxville, NY for stock tips. At times, "An All American Family" may be somewhat over the top for some readers, but this work provokes a lot of historical reflection, attitude introspection and will also make you wonder what the real story might be behind many a commemorative statue. This novel is a worthwhile journey along both ancient and modern Native American trails.

Only this author can travel back and forth, effortlessly, between the past and present, telling a tale of a peace loving hippie couple encountering humorous obstacles and then the main character's Native American past. Even though this work is mostly fiction, there are actual historical events and the uncovering of the mostly hidden brutal racism in early America. It is not a solemn work, however. The author's masterful use of humor, irony and juxtaposition makes this a great story. This book turns the pages for you. It is a must read for anyone.
This compelling and eye-opening novel is a fascinating weaving together of times, places, and people. I couldn't put it down! Hidden stories of racism and brutality among a Native American tribe, homophobia, a lost aging hippy searching for his roots, bizarre twists and turns, an exotic cast of characters, a detective-story search for hidden welath - all this and more in a novel that is deeply felt and moving and at the same time darkly satiric and someimes so just plain funny I was giggling out loud. A historian's clarity and knowledge, a wild imagination. a wicked sense of humor, a good mystery - all add up to a great read.
