Prince of Wales Boarding School, nestled in a serene countryside, fondly nicknamed "Patch" was responsible for turning young boys into esteemed gentlemen who would one day occupy the hallways of world government power and authority. Behind the high walls lay a secret, a secret not told until now. Led by a group of students leaders known as "Prefects" the students were subjected to untold physical and verbal abuse, intimidation, fear and bullying. No one ever questioned their authority ... until Gabriel, a freshman transfer, a "rabble", forever changed what it meant to be in PATCH.

I really can't see why this novel got so many 5 star reviews. It is after all just a teenage version of 'Cool Hand Luke' without the memorable characters in that movie, and like the movie, there is no happy ending. The main character is never fully developed and the motivations presented for his actions are very weak.

Patch Assumption is a crime! edition by Mucheru Njaga Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

After reading Patch and interviewing the author, and I can say with authority that it is for sure one of the most powerful books I have had the pleasure of reading this year.

There is something about a book that challenges you to look at all angles of a person's personality before you make the mistake of judging them. Patch does that.

It has alot of the elements that we hear about today in the news, especially when dealing with our young people the issue of bullying, abuse and lack of self-esteem. But there are important questions that are raised as well. What drives a person to become a certain way? Does that end up affecting the way they treat people in the future? And if it does, is that a justification?

Reading Patch reminds me that like the world we live in, the human race is diverse and complex. We have to take the time to really get to know others and understand the method behind their madness. Only then can we sometimes find a way to provide a solution that really works.

For young and old, Patch works in a big way. A must for your reading list.
I received an advanced copy and I must say that my son read it and loved it. Planning on getting copies for my nephews.
Patch is a riveting and highly relevant story about teenage bullying. It is superbly thought out and based on actual events. It is a must read for any parent of adolescents and for kids in Jr. High and High School. This story compellingly captures a highly important issue facing our young men and ladies today.

Gabriel grew up in fear of his abusive father. As a teenager, his father is no longer with him but the effects of his abuse are clear. Gabriel refuses to sit by and watch other kids get away with bullying their classmates as his dad bullied him; he's willing to stand up for himself and other kids. As a freshman in high school, this attitude gets the attention of the school's principal who recommends Gabriel be transferred to Prince of Wales Boarding School, a prestigious high school with a reputation for turning kids into successful gentlemen.

But when Gabriel arrives at the school, commonly referred to as "Patch," he quickly realizes things are not what they seem behind closed doors. The school is run by prefects, a group of seniors who have been appointed by the principal to keep order in the school. They do this by threatening and abusing the rest of the students. The bullies at this school are in complete control, with the full support of the principal ~ until Gabriel arrives on campus.

I don't generally read young adult novels, but when I heard about Patch, the story intrigued me. Bullying is a hot topic in the news these days, making this book quite timely in my opinion. I couldn't put it down. The story and the writing propelled the story forward from start to finish. The brutality of the prefects was horrifying but Gabriel's determination kept me going.

The fact that this novel is loosely based on the author's own experiences at Prince of Wales Boarding School is very disturbing. Njaga evidently attended the school and moved up through the ranks of student leadership to eventually become one of the bullies. According to the press release about the book, after reading an article about a boy who committed suicide because he could not cope with a local school bully, Njaga was struck by the familiarity of the boy's struggle, and Patch was born.

I highly recommend this book. There is quite a lot of violence and brutality in it, but I think the message is an extremely important one ~ and the story is interesting and engaging from the first page to the last.
Great book!
I couldn't put the book down once I started reading it. Mucheru has written a riveting book that touches on the ethos of respect being earned as opposed to being a right. He brings out the pride young men take in sport achievement and how perceived adversity can work out in favor of the oppressed. I'd recommend to all people who feel they have been dealt the wrong cards in life.
I really can't see why this novel got so many 5 star reviews. It is after all just a teenage version of 'Cool Hand Luke' without the memorable characters in that movie, and like the movie, there is no happy ending.
